Good health care is preventative care.

Haven Animal Hospital believes in the importance of preventative care. Annual and bi-annual exams are necessary for the well being of your dog or cat. Important health issues and changes will be detected and treated sooner, enabling your pet to heal or recover, or at least maintain it's condition before seriously or irreversibly affecting them. Annual tests are necessary to screen for transmissible intestinal parasites, diseases and infections. Topical parasites are a concern year round, such as fleas, ticks and mange. These often go untreated if your pet is not "allergic" and showing symptoms of infestation. Read below for a step by step example of your pets examination and why it is so important to have their annual (or bi-annual if over 7 years of age) visit.

The Examination

Head to tail - your veterinarian will be looking for odd lumps or bumps, skin tags or skin disorders. We want to make sure your pet does not have any cancerous growths or painful skin cysts. Poor skin or hair coat conditions can indicate dietary imbalances or thyroid disorders. Your pets weight is also being assessed.  Unexpected weight loss or weight gain can be an indicator of diabetes, heart condition, thyroid imbalances or painful joints.

Eyes and Ears - your pets hearing and vision can be difficult to detect without a proper exam. Animals are creatures of habit and don't often exhibit different behavior until the vision or hearing loss is significant. Ear infections can hide deep within the canal not showing any visible signs until it is quite severe, causing your dog to scratch and shake, keeping you up at night. Eye changes are common as our pets age, though can indicate an underlying health issue. Many of these conditions and diseases are preventable if detected early enough.

Joints and muscles - pain and discomfort can be well hidden by your pet. Muscle loss, arthritis and joint conditions affect all breeds and ages of animals. Many supplements, diets, exercise and medical treatments can be recommended to make your pet extremely comfortable, mobile and healthier. Early detection is very important.

Heart - listening to an animals heart sound, beat and rhythm help us determine it's function and health. Radiographs help us to further assess the heart size, vessels and the entire chest cavity. A simple symptom of frequent coughing can indicate a heart condition and should be assessed immediately.

Teeth - we can't overlook how important these are! Good oral care affects so many organs and the overall health of your dog and cat. Bacteria from the tartar present on the teeth creeps beneath the gumline causing gingival recession, bone decay and infection within the bloodstream reaching all organs as it travels through the animals body. Oral exams, appropriate dental treats and brushing are necessary for a long life.

Haven Animal Hospital recommends yearly services and products to maintain health and prevent disease.

  • Heartworm and tick blood testing
  • Intestinal Parasite Screen
  • Vaccinations - lifestyle specific
  • Annual and Senior blood work - screens organ function and much more
  • Parasite Prevention products - monthly year round prevention
Please consider the importance of preventative care for your pet. It is in your pet's best interest to prevent vs. treat a medical problem. Yours too! Please call if you have any questions or need additional information. We look forward to hearing from you.
